Interwiki Login edit

Hallo Henk
I find it a good idea to have an account for all wiki projects instead of one per project. This means, if you create an account at wikicommons this account is automatically valid for all other projects. If you login at one project you are logged in all projects and if you want to contribute to another project no new login is necessary. But this concerns only the account, user page, discussion and contributions remain separated.
How do you find this idea, to whom can I make this proposal, and was there already such an idea or is it already realized?

Categorisatie edit

Mvg Caesarion 20:58, 26 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Typo or misspelling edit

There is a typographical error resulting in the misspelling (in English) of Wiktionary as Wikitionary... which I discovered using the double application of WikiPtmp and following the link, the cross application of w:template:Commonstmp (en.wp!!!)... which would not connect to the properly spelled template. Since the computer is doing the spelling, the error sticks out.

I also fixed the link to the proper root category on Category:CommonsRoot which was pointing to a daughter {Fundamental, iirc) category, not the actual root.

Overall, we appear to have been working along similar lines, though I can't imagine why you haven't ported this system yet to en.wp!.

I'm doing so now. See Category:Wikipedia navigation templates (i.e. See on each sister Category:Wikipedia navigation templatesw:Category:Wikipedia navigation templates—viewing only one shows partial progress, both equalized, means that template is ported and documented!) where you can see the progress I'm making in porting the template on CommonsRoot to en.wp CAT:CAT! Where that typo occurs affects my logic of course... It showed up after porting Template:sisterwikis.

My approach was various WikiPcat templates in the following category Category:Navigation templates (Soon to go away)

Note the tagging: WikiPtmp on your templates, and conversely apply Commonstmp instead when logic is ported into en.wp. You must use a noinclude block!!!

Just thought to mention the typo, in case you're around. // FrankB 22:50, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cameralocatie edit

Wikipedia growth model edit

Hi, thanks for maintaining the nice Wikipedia growth statistics!

However, the growth model you are using for extrapolation does not seem to fit the data very well. I see no theoretical reason to assume that the rate of increase should follow a Gaussian over time; and the plots seem to show that it doesn't. What I see in File:EnwikipediaArtLog.PNG and File:Enwikipediagrowth.PNG is several distinct periods, each with its own regime. Let S(t) be the total number of articles, S'(t) the number of new articles per month. Then:

  • P1: before fall/2002: quite complicated (natural, given the small size)
  • P2: fall/2002 to mid/2006: S'(t) is a rising exponential A exp(B t), with B > 0 and one broad yearly peak roughly march-nov
  • P3: mid/2006 to present: S'(t) is a falling linear function, C - Dt with D > 0, with TWO yearly peaks, each in mid-semester.

To me it is clear that something changed in 2006 that (a) caused S' to switch from an exponential increase to a steady decline, and (b) changed the yearly pattern from one to two peaks. This discontinuity seems quite clear also in File:Enwikipediagrowthder.PNG.

What could that event be? My best guess is that its was the policy of requiring source citations for all contents. This requirement must have changed substantially the body of active editors (from general public to academics, since only they are used to finding and citing sources. Note that academia, unlike the real world, lives on a 6-month cycle). The requirement for source citations also made editing much less enjoyable (I spend much more time looking for sources than actually writing the article. Moreover citations are a pain to type, even if one does not use the templates, and make the wiki source almost unreadable for newbies). So it is not surprising that even regular academic editors who ejoyed writing new articles are now getting tired of the game and dropping off, little by little; while readers that would otherwise join the pool of editors are being kept away by the increased complexity of Wikipedia. However, I cannot recall when the policy was instituted; if it wasn't in 2006, then forget it...

Another possible cause for the "P2-P3 catastrphe" may the crackdown on pop music articles. I recall that, in the early days, fans were creating a separate article for each song in each album, even for the most obscure pop bands. At some point Wikipedia decided that one article per band was enough inmost cases, and only really notable albums or songs deserved their own articles. I don't recall when that happened either, and I cannot guess how big the effect may have been.

Anyway, for prediction purposes I would fit a model like S'(t) = E*exp(-F*t)*Y(t mod 12) to the P3 data, where E,F are constants and Y(t) is a seasonal trend factor. From the plots, one cannot tell whether the long-term trend in P3 is linear or a negative exponential, but we may assume that S' will never become negative, and so we may stick to exponential. Then the predicted size will tend to a finite maximum. But I suspect that the value of this maximum will be quite sensitive to the value of F...

All the best,

--Jorge Stolfi (talk) 16:23, 16 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for this comment. I would advise you to add this text on en:Wikipedia talk:Modelling Wikipedia's growth. As for my comment; The above reasons may well be valid. The reasons you give apply to the english wikipedia. Other wikipedia's don't have that strict citation rules, but still follow the same trend. So I would like to see that as more or less inevitable, hence all could fit in one model.
I agree the model does not fit exactly. I would like that you prepare your own prediction. I am happy to include it in my graphs (provided you give me the modelled article counts per month in a spreadsheet or so). HenkvD (talk) 19:07, 21 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Problem with 2005 data edit

Hi again, there seems to be a problem with the data between June 2005 and February 2006, as posted in your growth modeling page. That table says that the size of wikipedia at the end of those months was always a multiple of 1000. Indeed at the end of Feb/2006 the size is given as 1000000 exactly. Also for April and May of 2006 the monthly increase is exactly the same (+55858 articles).
Looking at the plot of the monthly increases, those months with rounded figures are clearly anomalous, althouh the overall increase over those 8 months fits the exponential trend. So I would guess that those numbers are corrupted, not just rounded. What do you think?

    year mo size increase

All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 04:35, 27 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jorge, the rounded numbers of 2005 were not taken from a csv file from Erik Zachte but from his website which shows only rounded figures like 626 k. If you look at the current statistics for June 2005 it shows 591 k. The value on the statistic site changes every month, because deleted pages are treated like they never were there in the past either. I think that is incorrect. I try to use as much historical values as possible, but for 2005 I do not have good figures. I cannot update these because of the reason mentioned. As for the increase of 55858: I don't have an explation for that, other than it is pure coincindence. HenkvD (talk) 12:31, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello, HenkvD!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi, although country maps can be interesting, it is not acceptable that the major part of all by country categories are having the major part of the initial screen obscured by such a country map. Copyright on tenwiki map edit

Hi Henk, hope you're well. Just a quick question... Is the reason you put File:Map ten.wikipedia.org.png under WMF copyright because it includes "ten.wikipedia.org" in the image? I would love to have that map CC so it can be reused, so if it's okay we should remove the URL mark and just put it in the description instead. I'm also going to update it so it shows the events on the 15th roughly speaking, if that's okay with you. Steven Walling at work 18:20, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

That license seemed approriate. The "ten.wikipedia.org" is not really the reason. It is OK by me to have it changed into any CC licence. HenkvD (talk) 19:29, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

HenkvD,

I absolutely love your Countrymap template: the way that it allows a user to visualize data geographically is just incredible and the fact that each country's locater dot is clickable is even better. This template is one of the coolest things I've ever seen on a Wikimedia site, and I've seen a lot of cool stuff during my time here. I love it so much that I've just added it to a number of sports by country categories, where it really effectively illustrates the way interest and/or the balance of power in each sport changes geographically: for instance, check out how field hockey compares with ice hockey and how baseball compares with cricket. I've never seen this kind of geographic data visualized before coming across your template. It is truly an amazing tool, and one that definitely deserves a barnstar and some attention. Thanks for all your hard work!

Divergence from trend edit

It looks like in recent months the Wikipedia statistics are starting to diverge from the trend line. More articles are being added than the function predicts. I expected this to happen eventually...the articles will not level out at 4.4 million when events keep happening in real time. Maybe the line will turn linear. (by User:75.187.207.99)

User:75.187.207.99 (whoever you are), you might be right. I hope so. On File:EnwikipediaGom.PNG the acual line is starting to diverge. On File:EnwikipediagrowthGom.PNG though the trend is still negative. Maybe it will level off at 15.000 (+/- 5.000) new articles a month. HenkvD (talk) 08:27, 7 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Logistic Wikipedia growth model edit

Hello, I'm a student and I'm writing a school report about Wikipedia growth models. I'm studying the exponential, logistic and Gompertz models. Can you please tell me the parameters and the equation you used to plot the graphs in the logistic model here (File:Enwikipedialin.PNG)?

Thank you very much! :-) --Pietrodn · talk with me 20:51, 29 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

The function is y(t)=@NORMAL(t,a,b)*c
and the paramters for the 3 functions are
a=71.226385 75.183300 78.692400
b=23.742128 25.061100 26.230800
c=3000000 3500000 4000000
t is the time in months since 1/1/2000 (so 1/1/2010 is t=120.00)
PS @NORMAL(x;[mean];[std];[type]) is the function in my spreadsheet program that calculates the normal distribution function for x.
Type 0 (the default) = Cumulative distribution function.

Monumenten met veel foto's edit

Hallo Henk,

Possible Rijksmonumenten cats edit

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Rijksmonumentencats edit

Hallo Henk,

Mvg, Basvb (talk) 12:13, 24 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Basvb (talk) 19:15, 24 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sisterlinks project edit

Hi,

I saw User:HenkvD/Sisterproject and I would like to know if this project is yet useful; do you know?

When I see Category:InterProject templates, all the templates are link to not existing pages. Could you explain me what does mean?

Thanks by adavance, and sorry for my English,

Automatik (talk) 16:36, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

1) The sisterlinks on Commons are still used. See for instance Category:CommonsRoot. On the sisterproject (for instance Wiktionary) is it is less used.
2) as for Category:InterProject templates: This is not related to the above project. I don't know that.
3) As Wikidata has started this year and will probably link sister projects as well all of the above could be replaced soon. See meta:Wikidata/Notes/Future. I certainly hope so. HenkvD (talk) 17:45, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikidata diagrams edit

Hi there. Regarding File:Wikidata II before.PNG and File:Wikidata II after.PNG, would it be possible for you to provide some sort of key for those diagrams? At present I find it hard to discern what the different symbols (e.g. the shields) mean. Thanks, It Is Me Here t / c 21:01, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

It is very generic. like a coat of arms for a city, region, country. In general a picture of the item, or even more general a claim like the other claims. Different colors mean that the picture is NOT the same. Same for the other claims. Some have claim Aaaaaaa, but others don't. HenkvD (talk) 08:24, 7 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I described the process at en:User:HenkvD/Articlesize. The data came from stats.wikimedia.org from the sections "Articles that contain at least one internal link and .. characters readable text, disregarding wiki- and html codes, hidden links, etc.; also headers do not count (excl. redirects)". Groepsschuilplaats versus kazemat edit

HenkvD (talk) 19:37, 12 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Fransvannes (talk) 21:00, 14 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open! edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 - Ein Wiki-Beitrag für die Denkmaltopographie edit

Hallo HenkvD,

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open! edit

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear HenkvD,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 edit

Hallo HenkvD,

Museum Het Valkhof categorieen edit

Hoi Henk,

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 is weer begonnen! edit

Beste HenkvD,

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 is vorige week begonnen!

Category:Rugby edit

Rugby has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Files File:Boerderij Dijkzicht 1.jpg - 7 edit

Hello Henk, you changed the id of this and 6 other pictures from

This is an image of a municipal monument in Oud-Beijerland with number
5

to

This is an image of a municipal monument in Hoeksche Waard with number
OB5

, but currently your link leads to an empty page, while the first links shows information about the monument. What is right? Regards Bardenoki (talk) 15:25, 2 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Bardenoki: I changed the numbering as well on nl:Lijst van gemeentelijke monumenten in Hoeksche Waard, because of combining gemeentes (gemeentelijke herindeling). A bot (erfgoedbot) will take those numbers in a day (or two) and the link on the pictures (all in the category of Category:Gemeentelijke monumenten in Oud-Beijerland will be linked again (automatically). Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 edit

Hallo HenkvD,

Bergen (Limburg edit

Hello Henk, can you please take a look to the last activities on nl:Lijst van gemeentelijke monumenten in Bergen (Limburg)? User "TOONDERKSEN" is creating new rows for monuments (what may be correct), but he uses ids that are already in use. This "new" ids are used here on Commons too. I guess you know the proper way how to do this. Thanks and regards Bardenoki (talk) 10:57, 1 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Bardenoki: Thanks for pointing this out. It turns out that the 3 added monuments are Rijsmonumenten (see nl:Lijst van rijksmonumenten in Bergen (Limburg). I informed the user and removed them. HenkvD (talk) 11:25, 1 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks! edit

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
