She was the eldest daughter of the heroic barrister and wit John Philpot Curran. Her mother deserted the family. Her sister Sarah is famous for being the fiancee of Robert Emmet.
In 1812, Percy travelled to Ireland to campaign against the injustices of the British Government. Amelia acted as his travelling companion, and introduced him to her father, who was a figurehead of the cause Shelley was championing.
