Category:827-831 Broadway

827-831 Broadway, between East 12th and 13th Streets in Manhattan, New York City, near Union Square, are two Italianate marble buildings, the facades for which were used as models for later cast-iron buildings. They were built in 1866-7 for tobacco scion Pierre Lorillard and were designed by Griffith Thomas. No. 831 was later the site of artists' studio used by Abstract Expressionist painters, including Willem de Kooning, Elaine de Kooning, Paul Jenkins, Larry Poons, and Jules Olitski, as well as the curator William S. Rubin. In October 2017, the New York City Landmark Preservation Commission calendered the buildings for considerations as historic landmarks. (Source: AIA Guide to NYC (4th ed.), e-mail from NYCLPC)
