English: The Baining people are among the earliest and original inhabitants of the Gazelle Peninsula of East New Britain, Papua New Guinea. They currently inhabit the Baining Mountains into where they are thought to have been driven by the Tolai tribes who migrated to the coastal areas in comparatively recent times. The Baining tribes get their name from the Baining Mountains which they inhabit. Their language is also called Baining of which there are a few different dialects.
Deutsch: Die Baining oder Baininger sind sind ein indigenes Volk im Osten der Insel Neubritannien (New Britain, ehemals Neupommern) im Bismarck-Archipel von Papua-Neuguinea. Ihr angestammtes Gebiet sind die Baining-Berge auf der nordöstlich gelegenen Gazelle-Halbinsel, wohin sie als vermutliche Urbevölkerung von den aus dem Osten einwandernden Tolai vor geschätzten 250 Jahren verdrängt wurden. Selbst nennen sie sich Chachet („Menschen“), von den benachbarten Tolai werden sie noch heute teilweise abschätzig als kaulong (primitiv) bezeichnet, auch die frühen Europäer übernahmen diese Einstellung. Die Baining-Sprachen (Kairak, Makolkol, Mali, Qaqet, Simbali, Taulil-Butam, Ura) werden nur auf der Gazelle-Halbinsel gesprochen.
Français : Le peuple Baining vit en petits groupes éparpillés dans la jungle des montagnes de la péninsule de la Gazelle, dans l'Est de l'île de la Nouvelle-Bretagne, province de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée. Les Baining ont développé un art cultuel qui se manifeste par la confection de masques évoquants les esprits de la forêt (le tarot, le papillon, le trèfle, le moustique, etc). Ces masques ( Kavat en langue vernaculaire) sont mis en scène à l'occasion de danses rituelles nocturnes.
