It is within the civil parish of the nearby village of Barcombe, from which people were evacuated to Barcombe Cross during the Middle Ages, to escape the plague. The village has a small post office, a shop, a pub, an electrician's shop, a fancy dress shop and a shoe shop. Disused Barcombe railway station used to serve the village.
