Barsur is a town in southern Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. It is rich in history and archaeological remains. Barsur was a prosperous town and later the capital of Chakrakot Hindu kingdom (8th to 13th century, Chhindaka-Nagas from 10th to 13th century). This is now known as the Nagavanshi era. This period witnessed numerous Shiva, Vishnu, Devi and Ganesha temples built in and around Barsur. Prior to the Nagavanshis, archaeological evidence suggests that the Nala dynasty thrived in this region from the 4th century, which followed the reign of Satavahanas (1st century BCE). Barsur and nearby region later became the refuge of Kakatiyas during the invasions by Delhi and Deccan Sultanate. With the destruction of the Kakatiya heritage and establishment of the Golconda Sultanate, the region became better known for the Gonds and other tribal groups. Barsur is in forested, hilly area. It is one of the most important archaeological centers of south Chhattisgarh.
