English: A Batardeau is a strong wall of masonry built across the wet ditch of a fortress. It is used to regulate the flow and level of water inside the wet ditch. For this purpose, the batardeau contains a sluice gate. To prevent the crossing of the ditch via the batardeau, the batardeau is typically built up to an angle and has a circular tower in the middle. It may also have iron spikes on top.
