English: Beaverbrook House is the childhood home of Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook. It was built in 1877 for shipbuilder William Watt, who sold it in 1879 to the Presbyterian congregation for use by its minister. In 1880, Reverend William Cuthbert Aitken arrived with his wife and five children from Maple, Ontario.
Max Aitken purchased the property in 1952 from the St. James United Church, renovated it, and gifted it to the town of Newcastle for use as a public library, naming it 'Old Manse Library'.
