Category:Brennisteinsþúfur

English: Brennisteinsþúfur are a volcanic landform only to be found in some high temperature areas. The english translation "solfatara" does only partially describe the phenomenon. They start by the formation of a fried-egg like solfatara, then built up a small hill - up to 2 m high and heavilly degassing -, and after some time, they cool down and erode. The translation would be "sulfur wedge" or "small sulfur hill". On the other hand, they don't consist only of mineral deposits, but also of pieces of hard and older volcanic rock which are pushed out by the steam power - at Hverarönd anyway.
