English: The name National Theatre is meaning two companies:

The name National Theatre become first the company in 1840. They play many in "temporary places":

  • The first building of the National Theatre of Hungary was opened in 1837 as Magyar Theatre of Pest (Pesti Magyar Színház) at the Kerepesi Street. This building exiting to 1913 but the troupe leaves it earlier...
  • The company moved to the People's Theatre (Népszínház) at Blaha Lujza Square in 1908. This building was blown up on April 23, 1965.
  • The company moved to the Thalia Theatre in 1964 to 1966. During this time, the theater building on the Hevesi Sándor Square was renovated for the company of National Theatre, but at the same time, in 1965 was held an unsuccessful tender for a "permanent building" of the National Theatre.
  • The company moved to the Magyar Theatre in 1966. After several unsuccessful attempts in 2000 began the construction of a new independent national theater... the company of the National Theater was renamed to Magyar Theatre (Pesti Magyar Színház) and in 2002 get an another company and building the name National Theater of Hungary.
Between 1871-2001 the Castle Theater (Budapest) was several times a second playground (from 1982 as a chamber theater) for the company.
The new National Theatre with a brand new company was founded in 2000, the opening of the second building of the National Theatre was in 2002. The theatre has the purpose to continuing its traditions so that in a manner worthy of the institution's significance, appreciate the interpreters of Hungarian and universal dramatic literature and theater art.
