Charles Porter Kimball 1825-1888 (second son of Peter Kimball of Hamlin’s Gore, Maine who was born May 19, 1793) opened his own carriage shop in Norway Maine. He moved his works to Portland in 1854. He was so well-regarded he was invited to be first president of the Carriage Builders’ National Association by Clem Studebaker, John W Britton of Brewster & Co and others. In this period his most famous product was the Kimball Sleigh or Portland Cutter. He was twice nominated for Governor by the Maine Democrats.
In 1876 he moved to New York where in association with Brewster & Co they made the Kimball-Brewster sleighs but in January the following year he started C. P. Kimball & Co. in Chicago with his son Charles Frederick Kimball
C. P. Kimball & Co. of Chicago became one of North America’s leading builders of fine carriages.
Charles Frederick Kimball 1854-1909 of Chicago, eldest son of C P Kimball added the manufacture of petrol and electric automobiles
