Category:Camp Nicholls, New Orleans

"Camp Nicholls", often locally called "the Old Solidiers' Home", was established in 1866 as a home for indigent Confederate veterans on land on the downriver side of Bayou St. John back from Esplanade Avenue. During the First World War, with only a few surviving Confederate veterans, part of the grounds was used as a military training and temporary residency camp. The grounds were turned over to the Louisiana National Guard in the 1940s, and to the New Orleans Police Department in the 1960s. Unused since damage in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, ground was sold in the 2010s for new home for the Deutsches Haus.
