Category:Charles Garnier by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux

English: A bust (68 cm high) of Charles Garnier, architect of the Palais Garnier in Paris, was created by French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux in 1869. After Garnier's death in 1898, his family selected a copy of Carpeaux's bust to crown the public monument to Garnier (completed 1902), located on the west side of the Palais Garnier in front of the Rotonde de l'Empereur. In 1904 a galvanoplastic bronze version of the bust (executed by Christofle) was given to the Opéra by his widow, Louise Garnier, and this copy is on display in the Grand Foyer of the Palais Garnier.^[1] There are also copies of the bust at the Chiesa Terrasanta in Bordighera, Italy, a church designed by Garnier [see it:Chiesa dell'Immacolata Concezione (Bordighera)],^[2] and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes, birthplace of the artist. A plaster version, possibly used as the model for the bronze versions, is located at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen. It was acquired in 1908 by the Carlsberg Foundation from Amélie Carpeaux, the sculptor's wife, and donated to the gallery the same year.^[3]
