Desdemona: Wife of Othello, the Moor of Venice, in William Shakespeare's tragedy Othello. Desdemona has married the Moor out of love and against her father's will; but Othello's deputy Iago, who secretly harbours resentment against the Moor, tricks Othello into believing, falsely, that Desdemona is unfaithful to him. Only after he has killed his wife does Othello become aware of Iago's devilish scheme. Out of remorse, he commits suicide.

One of the tragedy's most touching scenes involves a story that Desdemona, who has begun to fear for her life, tells to her confidante Emilia, about a lovelorn servant girl's suicide under a willow tree (the tree of lost love and of death sought out of despair). This scene, which also involves a song about the willow's symbolic meaning, more than anything else was made famous by Giuseppe Verdi's opera version of the tragedy, Otello.
