A "ferrier" (fr) is a mound, hillock or hill made with residues from the extraction and smelting of iron ore. The word does not exist in English, where the word "ironworks", nearest to it, is a composite word and does not quite mean what it is; nor does it in French reference dictionaries despite its wide use for names of large and small places in that country (not so much in England). There are many antique ferriers in Puisaye. This one covers 31 ha. It is one of the two largest in France, along with that of Les Martys in the Aude department, and one of the largest in Europe. It is a listed Heritage Monument since 1982.

The ferrier de la Garenne is now also a fully-fledged orienteering course, with 25 permanent check points, 3 types of tracks and the maps that go with those. National events have been held there.
