English: Sherkin Friary belongs to the earlist foundations of the Observant friars in Ireland. A papal permission for the foundation was granted in 1449 but the actual foundation was postponed until the Irish Observant vicariate was established in 1460. The exact year is not known. The friary was dissolved in 1578 but friars returned to the site in 1627 and begun repairing it. See Gwynn & Hadcock, Medieval Religious Houses Ireland, pp. 258, and Colmán Ó Clabaigh OSB, The Friars in Ireland 1224–1540, p. 68.
