Major-General Frederick Smith Strong, Sr. (12 November 1855 – 9 March 1935) was with the 40th Division. He was born 12 November 1855 in Paw Paw, Michigan. He had a son, Brigadier-General Frederick Smith Strong, Jr. (1887–1986). He was assigned as the commander on 25 August 1917, but was replaced less than a month later by Brigadier General George H. Cameron on 18 September 1917. He died on 9 March 1935 in San Diego, California.
