In popular speech the term gargoyle refers to decorative sculpted figures depicting fantastic creatures on an edifice. In architecture, the term is applied only to those sculptures whose purpose is or was to redirect rainwater away from the walls of the building. When such figures are purely decorative, they are called grotesques or chimeras.
