The Ghana Oil Company (GOIL) was founded on the 14th of June, 1960 as AGIP Ghana Company Limited as Ghanaian branch of the AGIP S.p.A. Italy. On 16th December 1968 acquired the Swiss enterprise Hydrocarbon International Holding Zürich a part of the shares. The latter were overtook in 1974 by the Government of Ghana and the name of the enterprise was changed to AGIP Ghana Limited Company and in 1976 to Ghana Oil Company Limited. On the 1st of August, 2007 the type of enterprise was changed to a Public Company. The main business of the Ghana Oil Company is the marketing and distribution of petroleum and petrochemical products in Ghana.

The current technical partner of the Goil Company is the Eni S.p.A. Italy (2015).
