[Heic jacet Johannes La Fontaine Castrotheodoricus, in Aesopiis fabellis condendis recentiorum unicus, Babriae et Phoedri victor potiusquam aemulus. Vixit annos LXXIV, obiit anno salutis MDCLXXXXV. Guilbertus Chabrol de Volvic comes, praefectus urbis, poetae corpus aliunde translatum monumento inferri curavit anno salutis MDCCCXVII.] [Here lies Jean La Fontaine from Château-Thierry, unique among modern-day writers of fables and winner over Babrias and Phoedrus rather than their imitator. He lived 74 years, he died in the year of salvation 1695. Gilbert comte Chabrol de Volvic, town prefect, had the poet's body transferred from elsewhere and placed into this monument in the year of salvation 1817.]
Chabrol's title was préfet de la Seine. – The inscription says, "he lived 74 years"; however, La Fontaine was born in July 1621 and died in April 1695, so he did not complete the 74th year and died at the age of 73. – The Greek and Latin poets of fables are called "Babrias" and "Phoedrus" in the inscription; today, we know them as Babrius (Babrios) and Phaedrus.
