Category:Guiding Angels

The Guiding Angel is distinguished from the Guardian Angel (though some can be both), in that one protects while the other serves as a navigator, one who points the way through life, and perhaps ultimately to Heaven. These also may be portrayed as Resting/Reflecting (ruhender Engel) or Mourning Angel (trauernder Engel), or the specific Thanatos Angel with the downturned (extinguished) Torch of Life. One of the clearest examples of the Guiding Angel is the Angelo Nocchiero in the Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno in Genoa, which bears the inscription, "AVVENTURATO CHI NEL MARE DELLA VITA EBBE NOCCHIERO SÌ FIDO"[1] - "Blessed is he who on the sea of life had so sure a guide". Among those impressed by this image was the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known fondly as "Sissi". On her visit in March 1893, she paused before the Angelo Nocchiero for a period of contemplation, then had the epigraph copied into her personal notebook. [2]
