English: The Celtic languages (or just Celtic) are a single branch of the Indo-European family of languages, which in historical linguistics is defined as a familty tree with branch languages developing from ancestral or proto-languages. Proto-Celtic is the ancestor of the Caltic branch, the first language of the branch. Not everyone agrees what the further branches should be. The main scheme depicts proto-Celtic dividing into insular and continental. Insular is well-defined by a great body of British and Irish literature. Continental, now extinct, relies mainly of short inscriptions. Several languages can be tentativeley defined from them. Hispano-Celtic is a failed attempt to define a branch of continental Celtic comprising all the Celtic languages of the Iberian penisula. There seemed to be several at the time. The hypothesis came to an end when all but two were reclassified as non-Celtic. Only Celtiberian and Gallaecian were left, but the evidence that they formed a branch had failed. Currently they appear to be separate languages of Continental Celtic, but it also has been questioned. If there is no Continental Celtic then the continental languages stem directly from proto-Celtic.
