A selection of images from the Mary Ann Shadd Cary fonds (F 1409), housed at the Archives of Ontario. This collection, consisting of ca. 6 centimetres of textual material (ca. 100 items) and one newspaper, a copy of Frederick Douglass’ newspaper from 1855, is one of the most significant collections of material in North America by or about Mary Ann Shadd Cary.

It includes correspondence and other materials that were salvaged following the demolition of her former home in Chatham, Ontario in 1974. It represents a significant cache of material for understanding her thinking on a number of topics, such as the editorial position of The Provincial Freeman, and documents her professional relationships and friendships with a number of prominent African American abolitionists, including William Still.
