Les artistes incrustent leurs décors à l'aide de filets et de plaques de métal dont la couleur contraste avec la nuance dorée des alliages employés. L'argent domine, lui est associé le cuivre rouge, parfois l'or ou des pâtes colorées. Cette technique est bien connue au Khurasan dès les années 1140-1150, et Hérat semble être le premier grand centre de production.

Copy of the cartel : The art of metal inlay is a fine illustration of the quest for colour characteristic of the period. To inlay their designs artists used metal plate and mesh in contrasting shades to the golden hue of the alloys employed. Silver predominated, associated with red copper, gold, or coloured paste. The technique was well known in the Khurasan region from the 1140-50s; Herat seems to have been the first major production center.
