José Pinhão de Matos is a painter, decorator and gilder who worked mainly for the Third Order of Carmelites, in Recife, (state of Pernambuco, Brazil), and in Salvador de Bahia in the first half of the 18th century:
Luis Xavier da Costa (in As Belas-Artes Plásticas em Portugal durante o Século XVIII) states that it was he who painted the famous views of Lisbon and Goa that belonged to the novitiate of La Cotovia, later exhibited in the Real Colégio dos Nobres" and that can be admired today in the Museu de Arte Antiga, Lisbon,
José Antônio Gonçalves de Melo, attributes him nine monumental paintings and four smaller ones, painted for the Church of Our Lady of the Third Order of St. Francis in Recife,
From 1726 to 1733, in Salvador de Bahia, he painted and enlarged the sacristy of the church of the Third Order of Carmelites, in addition to executing the panels and the oratory of the chapel.
However:
The historian Carlos Ott, basing himself on the archives of the Third Order of Carmelites, in his work "Dois pintores, um só nome", advances the thesis that José Pinhão de Matos is also the painter hired in 1726 by the city of Porto, Portugal, to paint the coffered ceiling and gild the sculpture works of the recently built Third Order church.
In the end: Although his major works are part of Brazil's heritage, José Pinhão de Matos would be a Portuguese master .
