Kurabane (Japanese saddle tree). The kurabane has four parts, maewa (pommel) the arched front plate, shizuwa (cantle) the arched rear plate, connected by two igi, contoured bands which connected the maewa to the shizuwa which rest on either side of the horses spine and serve as the under frame for the leather seat (basen or kura tsubo).
