Kuthu is one of several forms of historic Hindu temple theatre found in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is typically a single actor classical dance and drama performance, aided by musicians. Its rules and mudras are found in regional Sanskrit texts dated between the 8th and 14th century. Related to Kuthu is the Kutiyattam where two or more characters perform a story.

Kuthu and other art forms were a family tradition, where daughters or sons or both would learn the art from their parents or biological relatives, aided by schools associated with a Hindu temple. In the 19th and 20th-century, the most active Kuthu tradition was preserved by Chakyars, Nambyars-Nangyars.
