Founded in 1820 by Syed Omar bin Ali Aljunied, an Arab merchant from Palembang, Indonesia, the first building was a wooden structure. This was replaced by a brick building in 1855 by Syed Omar's son, Syed Abdullah bin Omar Aljunied. The mosque was renovated again in the 1980s, and its minaret installed in 1986. Further upgrading works were completed in 2010.
