At an early age Mr. Vanway started his own machine shop and through the years he became an experimental engineer. He had the first wireless (radio) in town, which he built himself. He later developed better sets and at one time built 100 radios and installed them in cabinets of solid walnut built by J.R. Showers for the J.G. Deprez Co.
Television came into being in the late 40s but Mr. Vanway had been receiving test patterns from an experimental station in Schenectedy, NY on a set that he built in 1927. He later was an engineer for RCA and G.E. between 1940 and 1970. He developed ideas and turned concepts into reality, solving many problems in the industry.
He also developed and installed sound equipment for silent movies and also installed some of the first beaded movie screens that were made in Shelbyville.
One of his greatest achievements was the experimenting the development of a top secret weapon during WWII for the U.S. Navy. It was an infrared snooper scope that allowed soldiers to see in the night. It was tested right out of the top floor window of his small shop on South Harrison St.
He was a member of the Varmit Club, National Rifle Assn., and a life member and past president of the National Muzzle Loaders Assn. Whem in Shelbyville you tought of electronics, you thought of Morris Vanway. He passed away Oct. 3, 1988.
