Category:Neue Reichskanzlei

English: In 1935, Adolf Hitler assigned his favourite architect Albert Speer to build the new Reich Chancellery, requesting that the building be completed within 1940. By the end of 1937, in the wake of the occupation of Austria and Tcheckoslovakia, Hitler ordered the completion of the building for 10 January 1939 (date of the New Years reception of the diplomatic corps of Berlin). The most important parts of the building were completed by then, but construction went on till 1943. The new Reich Chancellery had the address Wilhelmstraße 78 / Voßstraße 2-6, and the old Reich Chancellery, located along Wilhelmstraße, had the address Wilhelmstraße 77. Within the complex of the New Reichschancellery there was integrated a 19th century residential building, the Palais Borsig (Wilhelmstraße 79/Voßstraße 1). Near both buildings was the underground Führerbunker, where Hitler committed suicide at the end of World War II on 30 April 1945.
