English: The Old Fort in Durban was built by Captain Thomas Smith in 1842 during a campaign by the British to stem the desires of Voortrekkers who wished to establish a republic in Natal. The facilities were expanded in 1858 to include an arsenal and barracks. The fort was a military base until the end of the century.
