Category:Old St. Mary's, Chicago (1866 bldg.)

English: The old Old St. Mary's Church (1871–1971), built in 1866 as the Congregational Plymouth Church at 9th Street and Wabash Avenue. The Great Fire in 1871 spared this church building and thus the Roman Catholic diocese could buy it as its provisional St. Mary's Cathedral (1871–1875), while plans were made for a new cathedral parish (Holy Name) north of the Chicago River, and with the still uncompleted to-be-extended old St. Mary's Cathedral (on the southwest corner of Madison and Wabash Avenue) being burnt to ashes in the Great Fire.
