Deutsch: Den Roland (ital. Orlando) in Dubrovnik errichtete die Republik Ragusa - wie die Stadt damals hieß - wahrscheinlich im Jahre 1396 - zu Ehren Sigismunds von Luxemburg (*1368-1437*), König von Ungarn und Kroatien (ab 1387), Kurfürst von Brandenburg (1378-1388 und 1411-1415), deutscher König (ab 1411), König von Böhmen (ab 1419) und Kaiser des Hl. Römischen Reichs (ab 1433), der damals Ragusa im erfolgreichen Kriegsbündnis gegen Venedig die Unabhängigkeit erhalten half. 1419 schuf der Bildhauer Bonino aus Mailand die jetzige Statue als Ersatz für den ersten Roland.

English: Probably in 1396 the Republic of Ragusa, as Dubrovnik was then named, erected the statue of Roland (Ital. Orlando) in honour of Sigismund of Luxembourg (*1368-1437*), King of Hungary and Croatia (as of 1387), Prince-Elector of Brandenburg (between 1378 and 1388 and again between 1411 and 1415), German King (as of 1411), King of Bohemia (as of 1419) and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (as of 1433), who helped by a successful war alliance against Venice to retain Ragusa's independence. Roland statues were typical symbols of city autonomy or independence, often erected under Sigismund in his Electorate of Brandenburg. In 1419 the sculpturist Bonino from Milano replaced the first Roland with the present statue.
