English: The Otago was a steamship built 1863 by J G Lawrie & Company Whiteinch, Yard No 19 for Inter Colonial Royal Mail Steam Packet Co Ltd, London. Her dimensions were length × beam = 236 × 26.8 ft (71.9 × 8.2 m) and she had a tonnage of 645 GRT and 457 NRT. Later owned by Panama Line then British Interests out of Hong Kong and North German Fleet until 1873 when bought by this company. She was given an extensive refit in Melbourne with tonnage increased to 745 gross. Worked the Tasman run until wrecked Chaslands Mistake south of Otago New Zealand 4th December 1876[1][2]
The vessel should not be confused with the same name and similar age Steamer Otago built 1863 by William Denny & Brothers Dumbarton, Yard No 94 for Otago Steamship Company New Zealand[3]
