English: Ancient Greek "wrestling" was pale, from pallein, "to shake," in the sense of sway back and forth in contention, one of the most ancient words and concepts. Pale was thus a contact sport, taught and conducted at a regular place, the palaestra, at first no more than a field. The Olympian palaestra was a quadrangle bordered by a covered portico, of which many columns still stand. This type of architecture, applicable to almost any Greek or Roman villa of substantial size, is called Peristyle. Here the portico provided space for onlookers and shade from the sun. The innermost colonnade is 19 x 19 Doric columns. The portico is bordered by supporting rooms.
