Sculptor Ray King's Philadelphia Beacons, located on the four corners at the intersection of South Broad Street and Washington Avenue in the Breezy Point neighborhood of South Philadelphia in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were commissioned in 1993 as a result of a competition for a "Gateway" to the "Avenue of the Arts", as South Broad Street was branded, but were not completed until December 1998 because of logistical, financial and legal difficulties between the artist and the city.
