Nederlands: De collectie Menno Huizinga van het NIOD Instituut voor Oorlogs-, Holocaust- en Genocidestudies is de meest omvangrijke vrijgegeven collectie binnen het WO2 Open Data Depot. Het auteursrecht van deze bijzondere oorlogsfoto's is per 1 januari 2018 vervallen, waardoor de foto's in het publiek domein zijn beland. Menno Huizinga (1907 - 1947) was een vakfotograaf, die o.a bedrijfs- en reclamefotografie bedreef. Zijn werk vertoont veel overeenkomsten met de nieuwe zakelijke fotografie uit de jaren twintig en dertig. Al in 1941 begon Huizinga het leven in bezet Den Haag te fotograferen. In 1942 fotografeerde hij de aanleg voor de Atlantikwall en de afbraak die daarvoor nodig was. In 1943 legde hij het kappen van het Haagse Bos vast en in 1944 Dolle Dinsdag. Vervolgens fotografeerde Huizinga in de winter de jacht op alles wat brandbaar was. Hij verborg zijn camera, een Leica, in een kaaskistje waar een gaatje in gezaagd is. Tot slot fotografeerde hij de bevrijding, de intochten en de feesten. In totaal zijn 779 foto's van het dagelijks leven in Den Haag door de lens van Huizinga uit de collectie van het NIOD Instituut voor Oorlogs-, Holocaust- en Genocidestudies toegevoegd aan Wikimedia Commons. English: The Menno Huizinga Collection at (NIOD Instituut voor Oorlogs-, Holocaust- en Genocidestudies is the most extensive freely-accessible collection in the WWII Open Data Depot. The copyright on these remarkable wartime images lapsed on 1 January, 2018, releasing these pictures into the public domain. Menno Huizinga (1907 - 1947) was a career photographer who worked in (among other subjects) business and advertising photography. His work displays many similarities with the new business photography of the 20’s and 30’s. As early as 1941, Huizinga was already busy photographing daily life in the Hague under the occupation. In 1942 he photographed the building of the Atlantic Wall Atlantic Wall and the demolition necessary to get started on it. In 1943, he recorded the felling of the Haagse Forest, and in 1944, Dolle Dinsdag. Thereafter, in winter, Huizinga photographed the desperate search for anything and everything flammable. He hid his Leica camera in a cheese box with a hole cut out for the lens. Finally, he photographed the Liberation: the arrival of the troops and the celebrations. In total, 779 of Huizinga’s photos of life in the Hague from NIOD’s collection have been added to Wikimedia Commons.
