On September 8, 1978, The Historic Center of Quito was declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO the first Cultural Heritage of Humanity for having one of the highest densities of historical centers in Latin America.

The Historic Center of Quito is one of the best-preserved, least altered historic center in Latin America. In Spanish, (El Centro Histórico de Quito) was constructed on what was once a 16th century Inca city at 2,850 meters above sea level in the Andes Mountains near the Equator.
