Category:Primitive horses

A primitive horse is a horse breed or landrace that is descended from domesticated ancestors but has a physical phenotype that resembles ancient wild horses. Some of these breeds are back-bred horses developed deliberately to resemble the now-extinct tarpan or other wild types. Others have been left to run feral and reproduce by natural selection and have developed or reverted to a phenotype similar to their wild ancestors.

Characteristics of primitive breeds usually include dun coloration, primitive markings including a dark dorsal stripe and leg striping, relative small size with compact body, and very hardy with good endurance.
