Category:Provincial (bus company)

English: The Provincial Tramways Company originally operated tram systems across the UK. By 1936, renamed the Provincial Traction Company, it was only present as a bus operator in the Gosport area, through its subsidiary The Gosport and Fareham Omnibus Company (so renamed from the Gosport Street Tramways company when their last tram stopped running in 1929). It operated with a emerald green and cream livery. In March 1969 it was taken over by the Wiles Group (which itself was renamed the Swain Group in May 1969). Shortly after, the local bus operations were nationalised, becoming a subsidiary of the National Bus Company on 1 January 1970. Still trading as Provincial, the legal name remained The Gosport and Fareham Omnibus Company, but it was administered by the neighbouring NBC subsidiary Hants and Dorset Motor Services. Provincial livery became standard NBC leaf green and cream, while Hants & Dorset received the alternate red & cream version. After gaining a part of Hants & Dorset in 1983, in 1987 it was privatised as an employee buyout as part of the break up of the NBC. The newly independent company adopted the fleet name People's Provincial and reverted to a dark green and cream livery. In 1995 it was bought by the expanding First Group, which already had and continued to aquire various other local companies, and intitially operated it along with some of them as First Provincial, adopting a red and cream livery in the standard FirstBus corporate style. It eventually adopted the next First corporate livery of white blue and pink, and the company was eventually amalgamated into First Hampshire & Dorset.
