Scientific visualization are primarily concerned with the visualization of three dimensional phenomena, such as architectural, meteorological, medical, biological systems. The emphasis is on realistic rendering of volumes, surfaces, illumination sources, and so forth, perhaps with a dynamic (time) component.

Scientific visualization is related to:

  • Information visualization: visual representations of large-scale collections of non-numerical information, such as files and lines of code in software systems library and bibliographic databases, networks of relations on the internet, and so forth.
  • Visual analytics: an outgrowth of the fields Information visualization and Scientific visualization, that focusses on analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces.
