English: St. Muredach's Cathedral was designed by the architect Dominic Madden in the period from 1827 to 1892. The first mass was held in 1831 when the church was roofed but still not finished. Construction resumed under the direction of the architects Mark Murray and Sir John Benson in 1841–1846 when it was interrupted by the Great Famine. The next building period was 1855–58 when the tower and spire was erected under the direction of the Dublin architect James Joseph McCarthy. The last construction phase begun 1891 under the direction of the Dublin architect William Henry Byrne when the sacristies and porches were added and the painting and decoration finished in 1912. The church received the status of a cathedral on 11 July 1913. (See The Cathedrals of Ireland, ISBN 0-85389-452-3, pp. 22–25, and DIA record.)
