The Italian colony Italian Libya, existed 1934-1942 in Northern Africa in what is now modern Libya.

- The territory of the colony extended over the areas of the then Italian colonies Cyrenaica and Tripolitania (existed as colonies of the Kingdom of Italy since 1912) and the Fezzan area (with the mountains of the same name).

- Before 1912 were the territories of the contemporary Libya a province of the Ottoman Empire. From 1909 onwards were in Lybia also used stamps of Italy with the overprint "Barberia" (= the Ottoman name for this province). In 1912 was ceded the Libyan territory from the Ottoman Empire to the kingdom of Italy. Subsequently was this area occupated by Italian military units and annected in the name of Italy. The Italian administrative authorities began afterwards (from 1912 onwards) to use Italian stamps with "Libia" overprints for the postal traffic.
- In 1921, the Italian colonial athorities of this areas (Tripolitania, Cyrenaika, and Libya) printed the first own definitive issues, greater issues came for the first time in 1924 in circulation with good print qualities.
- Until their unification with Libya in 1934, Tripolitania and Cyrenaica remained separate Italian colonies.
- The three former areas was unified to "Italian Libya" effective from the .
- Initially was Italian Libya a semi-autonomous province of the Kingdom of Italy, later was it a colonial protectorate.
