The TDK KR (Krom) cassettes, made in 1973/74, used true chrome formulation patented by DuPont. The Japanese sought a royalty-free alternative, and eventually developed the ferrocobalt formulation compatible with chrome settings. As soon as TDK had the new technology going, they killed the KR type and quit chrome tape production altogether. All their Type II tapes, SA and the like, were ferrocobalts.
