Deutsch: Theseus besiegt den Kentauren.
Als der Lapithenkönig Peirithoos Hippodameia heiratete, waren auch Kentauren unter den Gästen. Als diese vom Wein trunken die Frauen belästigten und auch die Braut entführen wollten, kam es zum Kampf zwischen Lapithen und Kentauren. Theseus, der auch dort war, half seinem Freund und so wurden alle Kentauren getötet. Anschließend feierten sie ein großes Fest. Dieser auch Kentauromachie genannte Kampf wurde in der Antike oft dargestellt, wie zum Beispiel am Parthenon. (aus de:WP)
Die neoklassizistische Skulptur (1805-1819) Antonio Canovas (1757-1822) zeigt die Überwindung animalischer Natur durch menschliche Vernunft. Sie wurde von Napoleon für den Corso in Mailand in Auftrag gegeben. Kaiser Franz I. von Österreich erwarb sie für den Theseustempel im Volksgarten, seit 1891 befindet sie sich im Kunsthistorischen Museum im Großen Treppenhaus.

English: Theseus defeats the Centaur (1805-1819) is a neoclassical sculpture by Antonio Canova (1757-1822), on display on the Grand staircase at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The group was ordered by Napoleon for the Corso in Milan; it was then bought by Emperor Franz I of Austria for the Theseustempel in the Volksgarten; since 1891 in the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
