Anthony Carroll "Tony" Knowles (born January 1, 1943) is an American semi-retired businessman and politician. The first birth of 1943 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this distinction gained him the title "Mr. Tulsa", a name which was used as an epiteth by opponents in his later political career in Alaska. After serving in the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War era, he settled in Anchorage, Alaska, where he established and operated a number of restaurants in the downtown and midtown districts. He began a political career in the mid 1970s which lasted for over three decades. Knowles is best known for serving as mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1982 to 1988, and as governor of Alaska from 1994 to 2002. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, stretching along Knik Arm from downtown to Kincaid Park, was named in his honor.
