Tungnath is one of India's highest Shiva temples and a part of ancient Panch Kedar Hindu pilgrimage route in Uttarakhand. The site stands atop Tunganath mountains in central Himalayas at 3680 meters. It is mentioned as the site where Arjuna performed tapasya and finds mention in pre-4th century Hindu Sanskrit texts. The stone temple itself, however, dates to the 9th or 10th century, likely rebuilt instead of the older wooden temple that stood here.

The main Tunganath temple features a Nagara (north Indian) architectural style. It is surrounded by other shrines dedicated to other gods and goddesses. These feature architectures and artwork found in east, central and west India.

The Tungnath temple is a part of a Hindu pilgrimage across a sacred geography where many of the major rivers emerge in Himalayas. A visit to Tungnath mandir requires a trek, with the shortest starting in Chopta, Uttarakhand. The treks to the Tunganath temple are closed in winter due to heavy snowfalls.
