English: The Unionist Party was formed in 1917 by Members of Parliament (MPs) in Canada who supported the "Union government" formed by Sir Robert Borden during the First World War. Supporters of the Borden government ran for parliament as "Unionists", while some members of the Liberal Party running as government supporters preferred to call themselves "Liberal-Unionist". This tactic split the opposition Liberal Party: those who did not join the Unionist Party ran as "Laurier Liberals". Borden attempted to continue the Unionist Party after the war and when Arthur Meighen succeeded him in 1920, he renamed it the "National Liberal and Conservative Party" in the hope of making the coalition permanent. Most Liberal-Unionists returned to the Liberal Party fold. The party later changed its official name to the "Liberal-Conservative Party of Canada", but remained much better known by its pre-war name, the Conservative Party of Canada.

La plupart des libéraux-unionistes ne se joignent pas à ce parti. Le Parti change de nouveau son nom pour devenir le Parti libéral-conservateur du Canada. On continue toutefois à l'appeler simplement "Parti conservateur".
