Category:University of Pennsylvania - 9th Street Campus (1800-1874)

From 1800 to 1874, the University of Pennsylvania was located on the west side of 9th Street, between Market and Chestnut Streets. Initially, classes were taught in the never-used Presidential Mansion (completed 1799), built as part of an effort to retain the national capital in Philadelphia beyond 1800. The Presidential Mansion was demolished, and replaced in 1829 by twin brick buildings -- Collegiate Hall and Medical Hall -- designed by architect William Strickland.
