Viola da pomposa (or Violino pomposo; means wider viola) is five stringed instrument in tenor range, developed around 1725. Also, almost same or similar instruments are sometimes referred as Viola, Viola di collo, Violoncello da spalla, Violoncello piccolo, Fagottegeige, or Bassetto.
Among of them, especially the name Violoncello (piccolo) da spalla (means shoulder (smaller) cello) or Viola da spalla (means shoulder viola) is referred as a member of the Viola da braccio (arm viola), in contrast with the Viola da gamba (equivalent to Viol; means leg viola).
